It may have been only be a few hundred spectators standing or sitting around Court Seven at Flushing Meadows, but it was a momentous occasion for British tennis, with Watson, a teenager from Guernsey to win the first British girl, the junior version of the U.S. Open. Watson's victory showed that Laura Robson is not the only talented young British woman with a real hope of going on to become a top 100 player in the women's game.
In the final phase of the 17-year-old was only five games against Yana Buchina, the Russian who had beaten Robson in the semifinals. The only other British player won a junior title here have, is Andy Murray, who was the boys champion five years ago.
Since Robson won last year's junior Wimbledon title, the focus has almost all of the London, rather than the girl from the Channel Islands, whose father Ian runs the Guernsey electricity companies, and their mother Michelle is from Papua New Guinea.
